Connecting the Industry
Through the partners and resources of the NorthernNet innovation and collaboration programme, a calendar of forward thinking, innovative, visionary, industry responsive events and seminars is being developed.
These events will provide a free and in some cases, additionally funded, space for the creative and digital sectors to work together on buyer briefs, expand their ideas and products to survive and thrive in a multi-platform world.
Uniquely the events will connect the North West, Yorkshire and the North East, giving a detailed picture of who is doing what, where and how. They will be delivered by industry specialists who will give their insight into what’s on the horizon.

‘NORTHERNNET CONNECTS SOUND CITY’
Tuesday 16th March 2010: Broadcast from SxSW in Texas.
International Media figureheads in discussion, to be broadcast via NorthernNet from the World’s largest film, music and interactive event, SxSW.
Following its successful launch event with Cultural Commissar Phil Redmond at FACT, Liverpool on 1st March, the ‘NorthernNet Connects Sound City’ project is delighted to announce the second in a series of groundbreaking and innovative events. International media, TV and interactive figureheads including Vince Bannon - Getty Images (USA), Marcelino Ford-Livene - INTEL (USA), Jon Mansfield – BBC Worldwide/Commercial (UK), Paul Kane - BSKYB (UK), Jeff Bronikowski - Yahoo Music (USA), Peter Cowley - Endemol (UK), Scott Cohen - The Orchard (UK) and Michael Petricone - Consumer Electronics Association, will be broadcast to the NorthernNET website on Tuesday 16th March as part of a series of panel sessions from SxSW music, film and interactive festival in Austin, Texas.
As Vice President for Entertainment Partnerships and Development at Getty Images, Vince Bannon played an integral role in Sony/BMG Archive representation, the Led Zeppelin Reunion exclusive deal and the British Music Experience deal. Vince’s illustrious career includes having worked with Nirvana, The Police, Prince, Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews, Nine Inch Nails, and Guns And Roses during his time as a president of concert company Ritual Inc. and as Senior Vice President of Artist Development at 550/ Epic Records, where he worked with Oasis, Travis, Macy Gray, Celine Dion, Des'ree, then co-producer of the Area One Festival Tour featuring Moby, Outkast, Paul Oakenfold, Incubus, The Roots, New Order and more.
Currently the General Manager of Interactive Content for Intel's Digital Home Group, Marcelino Ford-Livene was an active member of the Innovation and National Priorities section of the Technology, Innovation & Government Reform transition team for President Obama in the lead up to the US elections. Peter Cowley is Managing Director of Digital Media for Endemol UK, the TV and digital production empire which was responsible for the launch of Big Brother the reality TV phenomenon and Deal or No Deal.
Paul Kane, Head of Innovation at BSkyB leads a team delivering innovative new products and services for Sky. Paul is passionate about emerging technologies and how they can be used to deliver compelling, engaging and exciting entertainment experiences to consumers. A 16-year veteran of the media and entertainment industry, Jeffrey Bronikowski most recently was Senior Vice President of Global Digital Initiatives FOR UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP. In February 2010, Bronikowski will start his new role as Head of Music for YAHOO! Music. Scott Cohen is primarily responsible for label acquisition in western European territories for the market leading digital aggregator, The Orchard. In addition to his responsibilities at The Orchard, he manages Danish indie rock sensation, The Raveonettes.
The SxSW Interactive Panel Sessions will be hosted by UK Trade and Investment, and digital entertainment consultants TAG Strategic on Tuesday 16th March. The first panel, titled ‘Is Content King? How great interactive content can define the relationship between media platforms, brands and the consumer’ – will discuss how creative businesses can define the value of their content to the platforms or brands that want to acquire it.
This will be followed by a keynote which will be delivered by Michael Petricone, Senior Vice President of the Consumer Electronics Association, the trade organisation which represents the $172 billion US consumer electronics industry whose 2,200 members include the world’s leading manufacturers, distributors and retailers of consumer electronics, followed by a final panel session: ‘Punk Attitude: How can we learn from the attitude of musicians/ artists’ which will explore how adopting a ‘punk attitude’ can can help an entrepreneur, executive or business – the panels and keynote will be hosted and available to view exclusively on the NorthernNet website www.northernnet.co.uk for more information please contact northernnet@weareboss.co.uk
The aim of the ‘NorthernNet Connects Sound City’ is to enable businesses in the Northwest, Yorkshire and the Northeast to discover the ways which NorthernNet can increase their contacts and expertise, facilitate collaboration, expand their ideas and products, and to survive and thrive in a multi-platform world. The series of master classes and events which includes the broadcast of the SxSW Interactive Day conference panels, will show the benefits that NorthernNet can deliver to northern digital and creative industries, with introductions to the unique Media Access Bureaux (MAB) which provide companies with industry standard kit and a high-speed digital network with transfer speeds of up to 1GB, all accessible through pay as you go.
The MAB will be particularly advantageous to freelancers and SMEs and will help to create a Northern hub of digital and creative companies which can compete at an international level. Delivered by industry specialists, the events aim to give a clear picture of who is doing what, where and how and an insight into what’s on the horizon for the industry.

workshop is open to filmmakers and producers from the North East, North West and Yorkshire only,
